College Football, Week 3

Note:  All spreads used here are composites and are for entertainment use only.  Do not use my picks for gambling purposes.  This is just for fun!

Last Week in Review

Overall, 30-12-1 against the spread.  Pretty good week although, again, these early season games are easy to pick for the most part.  Of the 10 games I profiled last week, I either went 7-3 or 6-4 depending on if you're asking Vegas or the Pac-12.  Vegas will tell you that Utah won that game because the last touchdown didn't count, the Pac-12 will tell you it did.  Whatever.  Texas was a disappointment, but it was awfully familiar to see and hear McCoy to Shipley again.  Alabama looked dominant and South Carolina and Wisconsin looked awfully good.  As for Michigan and Notre Dame, well that game does come with plenty of drama doesn't it?

Must See

These are the marquee games of the weekend or games that are going to be really good (not always the same thing).

LSU at Mississippi State.  This game is on the TV as I type this so, woo for being late.

Michigan State at Notre Dame.  What in the world is going to happen here?  After last year's come from behind thriller (sound familiar?) in the Michigan-Notre Dame game, the Irish and Sparty played an even better game that came down to a controversial fake field goal in OT.  Don't remember?  Here's a refresher.

If you're still not remembering the controversy, watch the playclock expire before the snap.  Ballsy call.  Not very good officiating.  Notre Dame is reeling once again and the Spartans have owned them in South Bend of late and I've heard a lot of people wondering aloud why the Irish are favored in this game.  Well, I'll tell you why.  ND should have won both of their games this season.  Shoulda woulda coulda, but here's the deal.  They aren't going to turn the ball over five times every game and they can't do it in the red zone as much as they have been or else Brian Kelly's head will explode.  As dumb as it sounds, I'll take the Irish and give the points.

Oklahoma at Florida State.  I don't think anyone knows all that much about either of these teams.  I'll be honest, I probably underestimated E.J. Manuel and he has impressed me thus far.  This guy can play.  That being said, I think OU has the better team and I think they win a close one and cover.  I wouldn't be terribly surprised if we got a push here, though.

Interesting

Boise State at Toledo.  Okay, Boise will win this game, but I really think this is a little closer than 20 points.  Toledo played well against the Bucks last week and they will be hosting the biggest game on campus since....hell I don't know, ever?  I'll take the points and the Rockets.

Texas at UCLA.  There have been some strange blowouts in this series over the last 10 or 15 years, but don't expect one here.  It's not easy to go out and win on the west coast and the 'Horns are still very unsettled at QB.  UCLA is a mess too, though.  I don't think it's gonna be real pretty, but it should be close.  I'm going to take the Bruins in this one.

UCF at Florida International.  I'm not going to sit here and pretend that I know jack about these teams.  I know UCF had a strong year last year and won C-USA, that's about it.  Why this is interesting, though, is because there is a buzz around FIU and T.Y. Hilton.  I want to see what this kid is all about.  Ummmm, what the hell, I'll take the points and FIU.

If I Were a Gamblin' Man

A.K.A. I really like these lines:
  • Iowa State +4 at UConn
  • Pitt getting three at Iowa
  • Arkansas State getting 24 at the Hokies
  • Arizona State getting a pair at Illinois
  • Alabama giving 46 to North Texas - oh, the humanity...

As always, please feel free to leave me a comment and tell me all about my glorious brilliance or tell me why I'm a freakin' idiot.  Enjoy the games!
