So the BBQ at the Big House was yesterday and Coach Hoke and company served up yet another commitment, this time from longtime M lean Chris Wormley. Wormley is a strong side DE that has the possibility of moving to the three tech DT spot with a little more beef. Let's have a look:
Rivals profile
A few quick thoughts. First, this kid is large and powerful. He shows some good athleticism, even running down a bubble screen to a slot receiver. He likes taking the inside move more than most kids his age. Oh and did I mention that's his sophomore film? There are a couple of clips from last year you can find here and here. They are shorter clips of about a minute each which is why I picked the one above to display. At 6'5" and 260ish, we are talking about a very big high school DE, hence my thought that he may slide inside at some point. With the two most likely DT recruits both NTs, I have to think that the staff is expecting to move one or more of these DEs inside to the three tech. I already stated I think Godin is one, and I think there's a good chance Wormley could be another.
Either way, I like this kid. What I don't like is a lot of what I hear about his junior season. Most people that have seen him for the last few years (he's been on people in the midwest's radar since he was a freshman) say that he was a monster as a sophomore but then somewhat meh last year. A lot of people seemed to think that he took a lot of plays off, that his motor was not running high, that he seemed slower/weaker/disinterested, etc. Others have thrown out the possibility that he had some nagging or even more serious injuries last year that may have been hampering him that just weren't made public. Maybe some combination of the two. As a result of his underwhelming junior season, Wormley saw his stock slide over the last year or so. Rivals rates him as a three star. Scout (and 24/7 and ESPN) ranks him as a four star still, but a ways away from the top 3 or so guy in the state of Ohio like some say he's capable of being.
His offer list reflects his potential more than recent whispers, although there is some controversy there as well. I've seen reports of offers from Florida and Alabama as well as most of the Big Ten, but others report no SEC offers and offers from only a few Big Ten schools. Whatever. Who cares. The kid can play and I think he has a big senior year and erases all doubt.
Going Forward
Wormley brings us down to 5 spots left (ish) in this class. You may have caught wind of Aaron Burbridge committing to Sparty. That one could be a bit of a thorn down the road as that kid can play, if he qualifies of course. And therein lies the story with him. M wanted him but he was going to have to wait, possibly until after signing day, for them to accept him because grades were too much of a concern. He wasn't willing to wait (or in fairness maybe just decided MSU was the place for him) and I wish him the best of luck whenever he isn't playing Michigan.
Reports from Amara Darboh's recent visit sound good, but he is a ways from deciding anything I think. Monty Madaris did not make the BBQ but may be deciding soon anyway. I like Michigan's chances with both these guys, especially the latter. Both big DTs were present yesterday and both gave a thumbs up, which of course is good news. Also in attendance yesterday was Bri'onte Dunn. TomVH gave a quick update over on MGoBlog and the news is improving on that front. As for the expected last OL spot, I kind of expect that to come down to Jordan Diamond or Adam Bisnowaty, whichever moves on it first. Just a hunch really.
All for now. As always, stay tuned and Go Blue.
I didn't know about the unimpressive junior year; hopefully he is dinged up and not a potential attitude problem down the road.
ReplyDeleteGood, informative post.
